SMA, a preventable disease, has a carrier prevalence of approximately 1/40 to 1/60 in the population. On average, one in every 50 individuals in the population is a carrier of SMA.

Eskişehir SMA Regional Laboratory Turns 1 Year Old!

On July 9, 2025, with the support of the Eskişehir Provincial Health Directorate and our foundation, Turkey's fourth SMA Regional Screening Laboratory was opened. Serving Eskişehir and surrounding provinces, the laboratory contributes to the early diagnosis and referral of individuals by providing a fast and effective process management for accessing SMA screening.

Newborn Screening

Within the scope of the Newborn Metabolic and Endocrine Disease Screening Program (NTP), screening of newborns for the diseases determined, preventing mental retardation, brain damage and irreversible damage, initiating appropriate treatment in order to prevent the diseases that may occur due to these diseases in the diagnosed babies, thus ensuring that they reach a certain level of intelligence. It is aimed to increase public awareness about reducing consanguineous marriages and to prevent the economic burden it brings to society.

What is the Purpose of SMA Carrier Screening?

The purpose of the SMA Carrier Screening initiated by the Ministry of Health across 81 provinces; It is to determine the carrier couples in terms of SMA in the premarital period, to provide genetic counseling to families and to reduce the long-term incidence of SMA disease.
