Eskişehir Osmangazi University (ESOGÜ) Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Ali Arslantaş said that Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), popularly known as 'loose baby syndrome', was known as an untreatable disease until recently, but a drug that was newly developed and started to be used in the USA at the beginning of this year is a hope for the children of our country.

 

Continues his explanations on the subject as follows, Prof. Dr. Ali Arslantaş said, “The drug in question was included in the scope of reimbursement as a result of negotiations with the Ministry of Health and Social Security Institution by the association called SMA-DER, which was established by the relatives of SMA patients living in Eskişehir. Treatment of patients with SMA will be carried out not just in Eskisehir but a large region including the provinces Kütahya, Afyon, Bilecik at ESOGÜ Faculty of Medicine in the Pediatric Neurology Department, one of the few centers established throughout Turkey for drug treatment. In this context, drug therapy was successfully applied to the first four patients on October 5, 2017 at our university hospital. In addition, it is being planned to administer drugs to other eligible patients in a short time ”. he said.
