2 YEARS OF SMA NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM

The Newborn Screening Program involves screening newborns for certain diseases. The aim of this program is to prevent conditions such as mental retardation, brain damage and irreversible damage. By initiating appropriate treatments for diagnosed babies, an environment is created where the discomfort caused by these diseases is prevented and they are enabled to reach a certain level of intelligence. In addition, it is aimed to reduce consanguineous marriages and increase public awareness. In this way, the economic burden it will bring to society is prevented.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) has been added to the screening panel as of 09.05.2022.

Within the scope of Newborn Screening
1 million 553 thousand 189 babies have been scanned since 2022
235 babies were diagnosed with SMA.
